• Special Needs

Being disabled in a refugee camp means a life of restriction and difficulty; there are no resources, equipment or facilities. Instead, there’s danger, neglect and often an early death. Your support will provide hope, dignity and the necessary resources to help children keep safe, feel valued and realise their potential.

    You can transform lives forever.

Bring happiness and security into a child’s life. Sponsor a disabled child, and give a them a life of fulfilment and opportunity.

DONATE YOUR ZAKAT

Prove that someone cares and no child will be forgotten.

Sponsoring a child with special needs only costs £40/month (£480/year).
You can also give any amount you wish as a general donation towards gifts, treats and experiences for children.

SPONSOR A DISABLED CHILD

Disabled children have needs that no-one can meet in the refugee camp. When families are struggling to find food and clean water, they can’t think about additional things like medicines, a wheelchair, suitable bed, or the other resources needed to care for a disabled child.

Worse still is the plight of the many disabled orphans, who risk their lives daily trying to survive in the hostile environment alone. With no-one to care for them, they are often the first to die whenever disease and severe weather sweep the camp. They’re also very vulnerable to all kinds of danger, exploitation, discrimination and attacks.

What will the Centre offer?

The Special Needs Centre will be a large infrastructure development in Shagarab Refugee Camp, the largest refugee camp in East Sudan with the longest established population, dating back to the 1960s. It’s designed to provide a multitude of services for disabled children and young people with learning difficulties, including:

• Educational activities
• Skills development
• Feeding programmes
• Medical care and assistance
• A community hub for increasing awareness, understanding, and friendship. The centre will provide these services whilst proactively breaking down barriers which exclude disabled children from wider society, and promote community collaboration and integration.

Highlights of the centre include:

• Capacity to accommodate activities for the majority of the camp’s approximately 3000 disabled children by year 3
• 18 specialist units and play areas to cater for different types of needs
• Tailored programmes for education, training, and preparation for a fulfilling life
• Training for parents, teachers and carers who interact with or care for disabled children
• A medical assessment clinic, and referral services to Kassala city hospital for cases needing additional care or intervention
• “Open house” drop-in facility for families and children to get advice, meet, mix and play
Therapeutic interventions for those with learning or mental health difficulties, including those suffering from trauma, and recovering victims of violence and exploitation
• Support and training for young people who have dropped out of school due to disability, ill health and other problems
• Training community members in professional courses to work with disabled people in general and young people in particular
