The refugee camps of East Sudan and the surrounding villages are built upon lands afflicted by climate difficulties such as seasonal droughts. Even when flooding occurs, it brings only dirty water which carries disease and destruction.

Refugees walk miles on foot daily, queuing up at one of the few water wells. Many children make these daily journeys, carrying heavy containers of water on their backs or their heads in the blazing heat. In summer, temperatures reach well over 40°C.

This is the reality.

Small wells in Sudan can serve between 3,000 and 5,000 people on average, and last for at least 20 years (but most wells can last much longer).

CASE STUDY

"My wife is very sick and we could not travel far to get water. When we found out Ethar are making a Water Station nearby we were delighted and hopeful. Once we could access water we began to show some great relief from pressures facing us."

"What you have provided is very useful and we thank Ethar donors for their efforts and hope for better in the future and thank you all for your unlimited support."

Yaseen Osman Khalifa, husband and carer, refugee camp resident, East Sudan.

WATER IS LIFE

UN SDGs

Our water projects work towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6:

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Water is the most basic necessity, essential for life. In remote places, refugees walk miles to get it – or worse, have to settle for dirty, dangerous water which has a devastating impact on their lives.
